2015 Phyllis Gall Grandparent Award: Betty Brooks

Betty Brooks is the grandmother to Spencer Moore, a child with something extra. Mrs. Brooks and Ruth Donnell organize and coordinate “Phyllis’ Angel Babies” a program of the Music City Quilt Guild, providing new, hand-made quilts to babies who happen to be born with Down syndrome. The guild voted to begin the Phyllis' Angel Babies Project around May, 2013. Betty Brooks and Ruth Donnell began coordinating and organizing this project in 2014, after the passing of Phyllis Gall. In Mrs. Brooks first year, 136 quilts were received by DSAMT; an additional 128 quilts had been given at the time Mrs. Brooks received this award in October, 2015. It has only grown in the number of quilts each year. Phyllis’ Angel Babies' support of DSAMT has been tremendous by donating hundreds of quilts over the years. In fact, the Music City Quilt Guild has donated so many quilts, DSAMT has been able to provide them to every Down syndrome organization in the state of Tennessee so every child born with DS in the state has a home-made quilt. As part of this program, Mrs. Brooks organizes a sit and stitch each year to make quilts for DSAMT. The DSAMT sit and stitch is the quilt guild’s best attended sewing day.

Please help me congratulate Mrs. Brooks on this well-deserved award as well as thank Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Donnell, and all of the Music City Quilt Guild for all they do for new families!
