Our Stories 2026

Individuals with disabilities and their families care deeply about the issues that affect their lives, yet many do not feel confident or equipped to share their experiences with those who can create systemic change. As a result, many important stories go untold. The Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee (DSAMT) created Our Stories to empower families and self-advocates to find and use their voices. Self-advocacy begins with learning to speak up for what you need, such as asking for help finding a job. Self-direction means using that voice to make choices for yourself, like deciding where you want to work. At its highest level, self-determination means owning your voice and taking responsibility for your path forward.

Our Stories is a four-week training that helps participants discover their stories, understand why they matter, and learn how to share them. The program produces both print and video stories for each participant. It concludes with a breakfast for key stakeholders and legislators, where participants share their experiences to highlight the realities of living with a disability and raise awareness about barriers such as meaningful inclusion, access to safe education, reliable transportation, caregiver support, and systems that are easier to navigate.
