In January, a few Nashville runners decided to take on the challenge to run a half marathon distance (13.1 miles) every month in 2025, because why not? Word spread through Strava and now we have a dozen or so runners trying to accomplish this feat. We then decided that we might as well do this for a cause. One of us was inspired to run these monthly half marathons by Thomas Russell, who completed this challenge a few years back. Thomas has a son with Down Syndrome and some of us have friends and relatives with Down Syndrome, so raising funds for DS started to make sense. After consulting with friends in the DS community, we decided that donating to a local, hands-on charity was the way to go, so we have partnered with the Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee.
The details: Down syndrome is a genetic condition where an individual is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. A few of us put our heads together (over a pint or two) and realized that a half marathon is 13.1 miles or 21 kilometers. It was meant to be! So we are challenging the runners to post our fundraising link to encourage their friends, family, loved ones, casual acquaintances, and avid Strava followers to donate while we run the miles. We encourage a $21 donation, but any amount is welcomed! For an extra challenge, go for the trisomy (three) $21 donation and sign up for a recuring 3-month donation! If you’re a runner and want to get in on this fun, jump in any month to start. It doesn’t have to be a race; just get those 13.1 miles (21 km) sometime during the month and post the link to our page. We also don’t care if you run one every month. Whenever you run 21 km this year, just dedicate your run to the cause, post our fundraising link to your run, and donate if you want to. We’re planning an end-of-year celebration/half marathon in conjunction with New Heights Run Club in December, so we’d love it if you could join us at this too.
